Driving Standards Agency wins e-Government award
• DSA wins e-Government award
• Award for ‘working in partnership’
The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has been awarded the e-Government National Award for Working in Partnership.
DSA was announced as the winner for delivery of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) last night at London’s Guildhall.
DSA Deputy Chief Executive, Nick Carter, said: "I am pleased and proud that DSA has won this prestigious award. Driver CPC has been a real team effort involving staff from right across DSA and a number of other organisations including DVLA, VOSA DVA, Capita and IBM. Winning the Team award is a tremendous tribute to the work that everyone concerned has put in to deliver Driver CPC successfully."
The agency was responsible for introducing Driver CPC to the 750,000 professional bus, coach and lorry drivers in Great Britain.
Driver CPC is a new qualification for these drivers. It was introduced to the bus and coach industry in September 2008 and to the lorry industry last September. Professional drivers coming into the profession after the implementation dates need to hold the Driver CPC in addition to their vocational driving licence. All professional drivers need to take 35 hours of training during every five years to maintain the validity of their Driver CPC.
It was brought in to improve road safety through better qualified and trained drivers, to allow drivers to meet the changing needs of the passenger transport and road haulage sectors, and to reduce the human and financial costs of road accidents.
DSA worked in partnership with other Government agencies including DVLA and VOSA. It also worked closely with industry representatives from GoSkills, Skills for Logistics, the Freight Transport Association, Road Haulage Association, Confederation of Passenger Transport and the Transport & General Workers Union.
There were 20 entries for this award category. Other finalists are the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Home Office, Scottish Prison Service and UK Border Agency.
